Conversations With My Unborn Child (Daddy’s Sorry)
First of all, I want to say I’m sorry. I’m sorry that I’m not perfect. I’m sorry that who I am may not be everything that you need. I’m sorry that I may use the phrase “I’m working” more often than you’d like.
More often then I’d like.
I’m sorry that there are points in your life where I may disappoint you. I’m sorry that I’ll probably pass some of my bad genes on to you. I’m sorry that we both couldn’t be just a little bit taller.
I’m sorry that I probably thought about taking your life before you even had ears to hear my apology. I’m sorry that you don’t have an older brother or sister.
I’m sorry that I have and will make mistakes. I’m sorry that I’m not sure how to be a good father. I’m sorry that for now we can only speak through dreams.
More importantly, I pray for your safe delivery. I pray that you will have all your fingers and toes. I pray that I will love your mama (assuming I ever loved her at all) as much as you love her.
I pray that you and I can have a better relationship than the one I had with the man I was forced to call father. I pray that I will always be there to hold you when you need a hug.
I pray that your faith in me will allow you to come to me for advice no matter what. I pray that I will always listen with open ears and an open heart.
I pray that the path you walk in life is greater and more impactful than my own. I pray that the pride I have in you will forever be reciprocated. I pray that I will be more than your father but someone that you can call a friend.
I pray that this message reaches you.
Now, I don’t know if you’re a boy or a girl, gay, lesbian or other, but none of that even matters because I’ll love you just the same.
What I do know is that this world is going to test you. I know that people are going to make things harder on you just because of who they think you are.
I know that it’s a cold, cold world but you have to buy your own jacket. I know that what I say might not always make sense to you but know that I always have your best interests at heart.
I know that if I have anything to do with it you will be a strong Black man or woman (gay, lesbian or other).
I know it’s kinda early to be having these kinda conversations, but I felt you needed to know this sooner rather than later. But most of all, I wanted you to know that I will always love you unconditionally even though I don’t even know who you are.
Love eternally,
Your father.
For childless folks like myself, do you feel you’ll be ready for parenthood when the time comes? Are you worried that you’ll somehow mess up in raising your child? Do you aspire to be like your parents or the complete opposite? What mistake from your own childhood would you try to make sure your kid(s) didn’t repeat? For those with children, what advice would you give for someone expecting their first child? What’s one thing you would do over regarding parenthood if you had the chance? How much does parenthood change your life? What would you do to be a better parent?
Speak your piece…
