Skills over Job Title

Living in DC you quickly learn that many are proud of their job titles. The DC circuit is filled with both men and females who salivate at the opportunity to discuss what a difference they make or their newest project. Blase.

They live under the assumption that their contributions to their grand firms or their fingerprints on some picayune responsibility transmit their societal worth. Outside their florescent lights they are at the mercy of the world. Their bible the yellow pages.

Few have told me “I make good money so I don’t have to know how to be a plumber.” Never be at the mercy of another.

The truth of the matter is that any responsonably intelligent person with a month to devote can excel in these “expertise.”

(For those that lack common sense I am not refering to those in the sciences or mathematics. I am referencing the growing number of those who believe their degrees in topic such as sociology or gender studies have true utility. As a disclaimer I have a degree in International Relations and I will be the first to tell you that it is worthless beyond being an introductory note for potential employers. I learned everything I needed for IR by reading one book. If anyone tells you IR is more in depth or dare I say “difficult” to understand you have met a liar. The field exists mainly because academics need to mentally masturbate. )

One thing matters in life. Accumulation of Skills.

It is interesting to note that the entire resume of an actor is dependent on the skills they posses. The ability to roll a coin over your knuckles, ability to cry on demand, flicking your fingers or whistling, even burping on demand, are all things that they could potential help them land a gig.

We should take note from thespians. Pick up skills.

You would be amazed how many people can not properly use a hammer or are unable to thinly cut an onion.

Every skill you pick up allows your arsenal to grow.  Survival. Seduction. Serenity. These things require you to learn things beyond those useless college textbooks you let gather dust on your bookshelf.

Think critically.

A friend of mine  was offered a job because his employer learned he repaired cars on the weekend. He was like everyone else in line for an interview. A college grad with a few years of experience in the field. The fact that his employer did not want to be gyped when he went to a mechanic secured him a position.

Separate from the Pack. Social Darwinism. Ignore it and enjoy mediocrity.

His skills seperated him.

There’s a reason why guys learn to play the piano or guitar and place them where a girl can see them.

This country has numerous shovel ready projects. It lacks the skilled force to start shoveling. Soon a plumber will make even more than your psychiatrist. Masons already do.

Every skill matters. The ability to iron your shirt to dry-clean status crispness not only allows you to look ice cold but keeps your pockets heavy. There is no such thing as a useless skill. Fact. Truth. Wisdom.

Even WOW players have groupies.

There are two things to take into account when developing skills. First. Secretive Study. Do not let anyone learn you are working on the skill. Keep it hidden from prying eyes until you have become greater than average at it and have an opportunity to showcase it. Never force it, let the time come when everyone else is running in circles and you stand skilled.

The effect of having an ability without anyone suspecting creates a powerful aura around you. They continue to guess how many aces are hidden on your person.

Second. Make your skills varied. There is a reason why we wish to be similar to a person such as Sherlock Holmes. His varience ensnares our imagination building him to be greater than any man. He fought. He played violin. He was a beekeeper.

Keep your internships and one tract minds. Fewer Renaissance Men allow me to shine more ferociously.
